Duelling genres -- noir vs. western. Actually, what Meuel calls "noir Western" is what used to be called the "adult Western"., In the words of Martin Nussbaum: "a new art form delineating our motivations and psychoses and permitting their various catharsis". Pretty scary stuff, no? Well, what we're talking about is the difference between TV's "The Lone Ranger" and "The Virginian".

I don't really like the western genre. There are a few here and there that i have seen over the years, but as whole I am not a fan. That being said, I loved reading this book. There is an introduction, plot summary and technical details for each movie talked about. I will definitely be tracking down most of these movies.

I found it highly informative and enlightening about an aspect of Western movies I had not considered. Like other reviewers, I have only seen one or two of the films discussed and so found the plot summaries to be very helpful. Meuel's format - chapter intro, director intro, summary of film, critique of film, repeat summary and critique, conclusion - makes this very easy to follow. Even if this is not one's usual fare, that should not stop someone who likes an occasional challenge.… (más)

True Confession: I didn't read the description of this book closely and thought it was a quirky entry in Akashic Noir series of mystery anthologies. And lucky me!! No way I would have sat down to read a book of film history. I had never really thought of Western films as Noir but the films covered in detail in the book are spot on examples of how this is true. I'd only seen a few of the films and will be tracking down others that I'd heard of but never seen.
