Biografía breve
I’m a mystic, writer, healer, lover, cancer survivor, father, friend. I write (mostly) gay fiction featuring all those paths and more.

Having led what can only be described as a checkered life, I can honestly say I’m grateful for all of it. I’ve been a minister, an office worker, a janitor, a drinker, and a software developer on my way to finishing my first novel in 2004.

But basically I’m just a psychic empath, a little weather-beaten and still learning how to live in the world just the way it is. The thing is, I experience the world as so much more than is generally accepted. That’s the challenge. Writing stories is the best way I’ve found to examine and share the questions, the wonders I engage daily.

My husband and I have been together since 2002, married since 2007. Between us we have four children and five grandchildren. We’re based in south Florida, and work hard to keep up with the astonishing life we’ve created for ourselves.

Very well written and just long enough to keep me flipping pages. I felt sad for the culprit. Perhaps forgiveness would have been healthier.

Stone and Shell is the story of eight-year-old Howie Evinger and his Intention during the Solstice for his dad, David, to find a husband. The book is told in third person through Howie’s eyes.

2.5 Stars

I want to first mention how much I love the cover. It caught my attention the first time I spotted it. Natasha Snow is the graphic designer and she did a beautiful job.

I’ve read many of the reviews and it seems like I’m in the minority in my feelings about this story. The major point, is that this is a child’s book with side characters who happen to be gay. It’s mostly about Howie learning about Intention and the Solstice. The book isn’t what I expected. Yes, the blurb mentions Howie is eight-years-old, but he reads like he’s five. To me, this is more a book that a parent would read to a child. That’s not saying the book is bad, but for me, it wasn’t the kind of book I wanted to read, and that instead of listing the book as an M/M book, it fits the Children’s genre better. I feel misled.

What I liked about this book was the explanation of the Solstice and the use of Intention. I also liked that through Howie’s eyes, the readers see how children don’t understand the way adults manage their lives, also how adults tend to keep their children in the dark about relationships even if it’s unintended.

The things I didn’t like were, as I mentioned, that this was a Children’s book listed more as an M/M book. The other thing that bothered me was the tremendous amount of passive telling. Maybe the author chose that style because it’s from the child’s pov. But, I didn’t 'feel' the story because of this issue, it really cut down on my enjoyment of the book.

Maybe it’s a case of, ‘It’s me, not you,’ since many other readers have enjoyed this story. But if anyone’s intention is to read an M/M story, this really isn’t one. It’s like saying the story is about the Buddhist Wiccan aunt who taught Howie about the Solstice, because she had about the same amount of screen time. The book could be in the Religion genre. This is a child’s book about the Solstice and Intention, with side characters who happen to be gay and an aunt who is single. I feel strongly enough about this not being an M/M book that I won’t even include it in one of the M/M challenges I participate in, it would be just too creepy.

I honestly can’t recommend this, but there will be people who like it. It’s a fast read, has a gorgeous cover and I liked the idea of the Solstice and Intention. I want to give Stone and Shell 2.5 stars for the writing, but raise it to 3 Stars because a book on the Solstice holiday is nice.

Lovely

Lloyd Meeker is pretty much an auto buy for me, so I was excited to see this holiday story. Howie is a young boy who wants his dad to find a new husband and be happy again. This really is a lovely, sweet story full of romance and family. I loved it.
