Biografía breve: James McConnachie was brought up in London and now lives in Winchester, UK, with his wife and two daughters. He studied at Jesus College, Oxford, where he was a scholar and received a first in English. He was nominated for Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year 2008 and has written fortnightly reviews of esoteric history and popular science for The Sunday Times ever since. He is currently editor of The Author, the quarterly journal of the Society of Authors, and is a fellow of the Royal Literary Fund, teaching writing skills at Southampton University. He has presented TV and radio programmes for the BBC and Channel 4, including From Our Own Correspondent, and has given talks and lectures at the V&A, Cambridge Wordfest and other venues. He is a director of the Authors' Licensing and Collecting Society and the Copyright Licensing Agency, and is a passionate advocate of authors' rights.

I read this on a whim, and was amazed at how much I learned. Partly, it was a great crash course in history (forcing me to go back and review a lot of history). But mostly, it was a great review of all the different theories surrounding historical events. In some cases, the author flat-out says that a theory is crazy and there's no way that could work because...
But he also has an interesting writing style that is well-matched for this kind of book. He'll start describing something, making me think "Wow, this is a far-out theory. How can anyone believe this?" And that will be the TRUE part. I need to read this one at least one more time after doing that history review. It is a very dense book, but a page-turner.… (más)
