Biografía breve
Bruce McAllister is known primarily for his literary fiction and fantasy, science fiction and thriller fiction, which he's been publishing professionally since he was sixteen. He was born in 1946 in Baltimore, MD, to a peripatetic Navy family with an Annapolis-graduate father who, as an oceanographer, served in anti-submarine warfare research with NATO during the Cold War and an underdog-championing anthropologist/archeologist mother whose specialties were Early Man and Native American studies. His short fiction has appeared in literary quarterlies, national magazines, original anthologies, "year's best" anthologies and college readers. His fiction has won awards from Glimmer Train magazine and the National Endowment for the Arts; and been a finalist for the Hugo, Nebula, Locus and New Letters awards. He has served on judges panels for the NEA/CCLM, James Tiptree Memorial Award, and Philip K. Dick Award, and was for a number of years associate editor of the Best Science Fiction anthology series edited by Harry Harrison and Brian Aldiss.

I was given a free e-copy of this book through the Goodreads giveaway program. This does not in any way affect my opinion. I try to express only my most honest opinion in a spoiler-free way. If you feel anything in my review is a spoiler and is not already hidden in spoiler brackets please let me know. Thank you.

This one was hard to read. It skipped around a lot and that made it even harder to follow. I found my mind wandering often and usually had to force myself to pick it up. I did find things interesting every once in a great while, and the imagery was beautiful. The village sounds amazing and makes me want to go there, despite all the creepy things from the story. All in all, this but book wasn't the worst but I didn't feel it was anything super special either.… (más)

I haven't read anything by McAllister before so I wasn't really sure what to expect. To tell the truth, I don't remember the circumstances as to why I picked up the book. Not a dig on McAllister; he's just not an author that pops up on my usual watchlist of horror authors. Considering that most of the stories in the book were science fiction, it's not hard to figure out why. I do remember skipping this book a couple of times to read something else instead. The combination of an unknown author and a title that didn't grab me kept me from being eager to start the collection. I should have known better because the collection is pretty solid. Plus each story had some author notes on how the story came into existence. I always enjoy that bit of "behind the scenes". Those biographical moments also revealed that McAllister taught for a while at UC Irvine, where I graduated. Zot! I think he was gone before I got there but still pretty cool. Anyway, considering the size of my To Be Read pile, I'm probably not going to hunt down other novels by McAllister. At the same time, if something is conveniently there, I'm going to read and enjoy it. As usual, my favorites are below.

"Dream Baby" - A war-time nurse discovers she can see who is going to die.
"Kin" - A boy hires a killer to protect his unborn sister.
"World of the Wars" - Mars aliens or just the normal aliens next door.
"The Boy in Zaquitos" - The sub-title is a perfect description. The Retired Operative Speaks to a Class.
"Stu" - A scientist helps a boy to see more of the world.

Listened to this short story courtesy of LeVar Burton Reads (ITS READING RAINBOW FOR ADULTS!!!!!). It is a story of a boy who hires a alien to kill someone who is going to kill his sister. The characters show a lot of complexity in a short amount of story and the story itself is heartfelt beneath the whole hiring an alien to kill someone thing.

Le mar, le mar... oh how I love the sea! This story captures its essence in a quaint and slightly eerie way... an alternate take on the mermaid/siren mythos.
