The life story of the “truly Catholic president” of Ecuador who Our Lady of Good Success foretold would live in the 19th century and consecrate the country to the Sacred Heart. His intransigent Catholic stance made him loved by the people and hated by the enemies of the Church. In 1875, he was murdered outside the Cathedral in Quito, his last words being, "I die, but God does not die!" Pius XII said he died "the death of a martyr ... a victim for his Faith and Catholic charity."
