John Matthews was born in the North of England in 1948. He has been a professional writer since 1980, and has produced over forty books ranging from Celtic and Arthurian legends to collections of stories, essays, and poetry He has given workshops in Britain, Central Europe, and America and is mostrar más primarily concerned with the interpretation of myth. He is an internationally renowned authority on mythology and folklore with a special interest in the Arthurian and Grail traditions and Celtic lore. Matthews best known works are The Grail: Quest for Eternal Life, Taliesin: Shamanism and the Bardic Mysteries in Britain and Ireland, and The Celtic Shaman. Other books include Arthur and the Grail Quest, Within the Hollow Hills, and The Winter Solstice, which won the Benjamin Franklin Award in 1998. Matthews has also co-authored with his wife, Caitlin Matthews, a study of the Western mystery tradition, The Western Way. Together they designed and wrote the best-selling Arthurian Tarot, which has sold more than 50,000 copies and has been translated into several languages. Very informative, well researched history of this legendary character. In Victorian times, the devil from Punch and Judy, was briefly replaced by spring-heeled Jack. References to Valentine Dyall the Man in Black Appointment with Fear, and Stephen King ("Strawberry Spring" is a horror short story). The author also co-created a Steampunk tarot (with Wil Kingham and Caitlín Matthews) and used SPJ as one of the cards.
The book was a bit dry. It tried to position the Arthurian legend in a historical context and from where its elements and characters, particularly Arthur, came. Only a few stories are retold placed firmly in Celtic roots with the Mabinogion being the prime source of these. I liked the full color plates painted by Richard Hook. I can't really recommend this unless you're really into Arthurian legend and its roots in actual history and ancient culture.
This book was great! Perfect for kids who are into mythology and are looking for something a little different. The stories are altered slightly to be age appropriate without completely butchering them. The illustrations are beautiful, and I love that it comes with a big map. Maps make everything better.

This is a TREASURE!!! Stories of knights of the Roundtable that I've never ever heard (not that I am all that knowledgeable to begin with), and best of all, powerful stimulus for ancestral awakenings and inspiration. Thank you FOREVER, John and Caitlín, for all you have given us, including this gorgeous wellspring of story and magic.
Final Update:
Oh how I hated to say goodbye on the afternoon of Dec. 31 (yesterday). What an absolutely mesmerizing daily practice this ended up being. I know that the Matthews wrote this decades ago, but of course that's nothing in comparison to centuries of lore and stories. And for me, it was a revelation -- filled with tales I'd never heard, names I'd never read, and imagination illuminated day in and day out for 12 full months of history and Mystery.
Again, my deepest gratitude to John and Caitlín for their diligence and scholarship. It has been a beautiful, sometimes harrowing, always magical journey. A gift of a lifetime.… (más)
