In 1983 she won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in Terms of Endearment. She has received five other Oscar nominations and five Golden Globe nominations. MacLaine made her film debut in 1955 and has starred in over 50 films since then. MacLaine has written a few books about her spiritual belief in reincarnation. She also authored a book about George McGovern in 1972 when he was running for president. The book is entitled, McGovern: The Man and His Beliefs. Together with her younger brother, Warren Beatty, MacLaine used her high-profile status to raise funds for the McGovern campaign.
