When I was studying English for undergrad, I had to purchase an excessive number of copies of literature textbooks and anthologies. This was one of them, which will most likely never be used again, but considering it cost me as much as it did, it'll stick around for a bit longer.

“Oedipus Tyrannus” and “Antigone” by Sophocles in World Masterpieces. Vol. I : Literature of Western Culture through the Renaissance. 3d ed. Norton, 1973. This was the second assignment for Dipso, the great books discussion group I am in, and they were much easier to read than Plato’s dialogues!

Literature from the Ancient World, Middle Ages and Renaissance Periods, chosen with care to be an accurate sampling of what was best, if not best known. A short course for one who can't apply his entire life to the study of great literature, or just to whet one's appetite.
