Biografía breve: Adriana Lisboa is a Brazilian writer. She is the author of six novels, and has also published poetry, short stories and books for children. Originally written in Portuguese, her books have been translated into more than a dozen languages. Crow Blue is Lisboa's most recent novel translated into English and was named a book of the year by The Independent (London). Her stories and poems have appeared in Granta, Modern Poetry in Translation, The Brooklyn Rail, Litro, The Missing Slate, Joyland, Sonofabook, Waxwing, and others.

Crow blue por Adriana Lisboa

Following her mother's death, Vanja arrives in Colorado at the age of thirteen, uprooting herself from her home in Brazil to live with Fernando, her mother's first husband. Though her ultimate hope is to find her biological father, the novel takes a touching, meandering path toward that end. Vanja finds Lakewood, a suburb of Denver, to be nothing like Rio, but she acclimatizes fairly easily (though she can't help but compare her new — odd, yet sort of charming — environs with her former idyllic life on Copacabana Beach). Vanja's narrative includes a colorful cast of supporting characters, but it is also interrupted by the darker, parallel story of Fernando's past. The book is beautifully and delicately written. One quibble, which is perhaps more on the translator, is the frequent use of the phrase "as if" — unfortunately, as happens with these things, once I started to notice it, I began seeing it constantly.… (más)

Der Sommer der Schmetterlinge

Die ungleichen Schwestern Clarice und Maria Inês erleben in den 50er Jahren eine scheinbar behütete und schöne Kindheit. Doch es gibt Dinge, über die nicht geredet werden darf. So bewahren sie das dunkle Geheimnis, das immer Einfluss auf ihr Leben hat. Nach mehr als zwanzig Jahren treffen sie sich wieder auf der Fazenda im Hinterland Rio de Janeiros, wo sie aufwuchsen. Erst jetzt, nach so vielen Jahren und nach dem Tod der Eltern, kommt das zur Sprache, was damals geschah.
Da der Schreibstil sehr bildhaft und poetisch, manches Mal sogar langatmig ist, habe ich mich anfangs schwer getan beim Lesen dieses Buches. Diese tragische Geschichte wird aus verschiedenen Perspektiven erzählt. Das Leben auf der Fazenda und die schöne Umgebung wurden sehr gut beschrieben.
Clarice ist die ältere der beiden Schwestern. Sie ist brav und daher beliebter als die rebellische Maria Inês. Clarice wird während ihrer Pubertät vergewaltigt. Das hinterlässt natürlich Spuren. Sie wird dann von der Familie als Verrückt angesehen, denn Depressionen und Selbstmordversuche erfordern psychiatrische Behandlungen. Aber auch Maria Inés, die damals alles beobachtet hat, leidet noch, denn das, was sie sah, konnte sie sich nicht von der Seele reden. Es hat sie zu einem misstrauischen Menschen gemacht, der sich vor anderen zurückzieht. Keiner der Charaktere kam mir wirklich nah, obwohl die Geschichte nach Mitgefühl und Empathie schrie. , denn das Innere der Schwestern blieb mir verschlossen.
Nachdem nun das Unaussprechbare endlich angesprochen wurde, scheint es möglich, dass sich die Schwestern nach langer Zeit einander annähern.
Ein Roman über ein brisantes Thema, der mich aber nicht so ganz packen konnte.… (más)

L’urgence de sa situation décide David à liquider toute sa vie et à partir mourir ailleurs. Il demande à Alex où elle aimerait aller, elle répond Hanoï. Il lui propose de l’accompagner. En entrelaçant des vies aussi différentes, Adriana Lisboa construit, avec profondeur et légèreté, autour de personnages fragiles et attachants, une histoire d’amour et de détermination, mais aussi d’acceptation et de renoncement, dans laquelle les choix des personnes peuvent changer le destin de ceux qui les entourent.

Crow Blue por Adriana Lisboa

Sometimes I need to paraphrase Paul Simon - "Slow down you read too fast. You gotta make the novel last." So it is with 'Crow Blue', a novel to be read sentence at a time because each sentence might be a little poem. Or it might not.
This is a lovely book. Written in the first person there are two, almost distinct, voices. The one of thirteen years - curious, cute, exploring, mixed-up - the other, of 21, now grown-up and reflective. There is a plot. Well, more than one actually. The plotlines enmesh (it's a word the character discovers).
Translated sensitively from Portuguese by an Australian. Surprise--an Australian? Why should I be surprised? Cultural cringe?… (más)
