This book parallels the feminist leanings of both the author, a contemporary professor of art history, and that of Victorine Meurant, Manet's favorite model, and then later, an artist in her own right. The diminishment of professional women in the arts seen in the late 1800's is discussed as it still exists today. The detective work required to track down historical evidence of Victorine Meurant and the academic process of this scholarly work is described and successfully illustrates the searching and tedium that is sometimes required to establish the truth of one's life and contribution.
