Self-help books, at their best, empower readers to become a better version of their self. In other words, they can raise readers’ self-esteem. This book – written by a Harvard-educated athlete turned lawyer turned career coach – aspires to do just that. He helps readers identify their “heart-of-hearts” and then to act out of it. He does so while remaining religiously and politically neutrally.

Lindner uses positivity as a method to bring forth one’s true self to contribute to the world around. While not forgetting the negative completely, he encourages readers to embrace positive emotions. He couples this approach with inspirational stories from his life that embody the messages he seeks to convey. Standard psychology that seeks to increase self-esteem and self-empowerment underlies most of Lindner’s messages.

While it’s hard to argue against being positive about whatever should come, Lindner takes a relatively silent line when it comes to handling criticism. Giving and receiving criticism are, for me, the biggest difficulties of a purely positive approach. Indeed, sometimes that very criticism is unfair and unjust, which makes responding positively even more difficult. I would have liked to hear more specific techniques about finding “love, positivity, and purpose” in the midst of hardship.

Overall, this book is an easy and accessible read. Its messages are reliable and helpful to build one up. It aspires to inspire through storytelling. Unfortunately, it avoids delving into difficult topics that one might encounter on this journey to being better.

Ken Lindner explains how to use his Positive Life Choice Psychology (PLCP) program to improve your quality of life. He includes life lessons to get us thinking about how we might help others as well as ourselves overcome fear and insecurities or self-imposed restrictions.

We are often taught to treat others the way we want to be treated. If we make a positive choice to follow this instruction we are kind, caring, respectful.

This book gives some insight into times when poor choices are made. There are some instances where Lindner points out situations where people were emotional and impulsive. They overreact to situations, without knowing the whole story. In the end, they felt embarrassment and shame for their self-sabotaging behavior of focusing on others' flaws when they should have been focusing on their own.

Research shows that people who feel confident in themselves can problem solve and make better decisions, stand up for themselves, and forge ahead to meet their goals.

Positive thinking begins with self-talk. You know it's that thing we often do where we put our best foot forward. We go into an interview or important meeting pumping ourselves up with 'I can do it. 'I'm good enough.' 'If I make a mistake there will be something I can learn from it.'

There are chapters discussing how to overcome negativity to provide love, repair, and healing. Lindner's insights and activities help guide readers to confidence and self-esteem so they will feel more in control and better able to achieve a state of well-being.
