Carle Museum horse exhibit

Ted and Betsy travel to Mongolia for the annual Naadam (NAH-dum), a Mongolian national summer festival featuring horse racing events (as well as archery and wrestling, but horses are the focus here). They travel with a guide and a driver, and experience the hospitality on the steppe as they visit and learn from the horse trainers. The illustrations are predominantly realistic watercolors, but there are small, cartoon-style illustrations as well (somewhat reminiscent of William Steig's style).

This text-heavy story is best for older readers, and a good chance to learn about a unique country and culture. Front matter includes a note from the author/illustrators and a map; back matter includes "Ger Facts," "Other Mongolia Facts," and a comprehensive glossary and pronunciation guide.

All rivers in India are sacred, and the Ganges most of all. Every year, more than one million Hindu pilgrims journey to Benares to renew themselves in its waters. Caldecott Honor medalist Ted Lewin joined the pilgrims at the river's edge for an experience he describes as one of the most unforgettable of his life. His luminous watercolors and simple, evocative text brilliantly capture the traditions, beliefs, and colorful pageantry of the devout and their ancient city.

This is a beautiful book to introduce during a geography lesson. This is more of a trade and commerce book - it is not a story. The purpose that it serves is that of introducing the reader to markets in different parts of the world, such as Uganda, Ecuador, and Ireland, to name a few countries. As your reading, you don't know where the author is going to take you next. He brings you into the world of markets and how the people who work and shop at those markets make them come to life. The illustrations are so real, from the meats, the people, their clothing, it's impressive. I can quickly put together three lessons on just this one book. I really liked it.… (más)
