Cricket was once the national sport in the United States; when George Washington's army had downtime, they played cricket, and it remained a popular sport, especially in the south, until the Civil War. Postbellum, Philadelphia became the epicentre of the US cricket world, particularly with the presence of John King, perhaps the best player in the world not to have played Test cricket.
"Philadelphia and North American cricketers 1878 - 1972" captures some of this as it lists all the cricketers who have appeared in a first-class match for Philadelphia from 1878 to 1913 (amongst other things, World War I knocked cricket in the US on its backside), those who have appeared in a first-class match in north America from 1880 - 1972 and statistics for all these cricketers.
