I first read the COBOL version of this book in the 1970's and it changed the way everyone in the department programmed. If you program or do any kind of problem solving (who doesn't) I recommend this book. Because of this series, I frequently have programmers tell me they have never seen code so easy to read and understand. It's not me, it's these books.

There are Holmes pastiches, and there are books about computer programming. This tries to be both at once, and to me, each distracts (and detracts) somewhat from the other. The "analytical engine" and the whole steampunk aspect of the story would doubtless appeal to hard-core Holmesians and steampunk fans.

A classic, in a well-populated genre. Humorous, insightful, memorable.

The book's detailed examples and programs enable the reader to follow each problem on his own computer and to reach for himself Holmes's often surprising conclusions.
This entertaining manual on how to program your computer in Pascal proves that computer programming needn't be a mystery.… (más)
