I agreed with much of what Lanza says in his book, but even I found him too strident at times. If I didn't agree with so much, I think I would have not finished the book! The book gets a fourth star from me because I enjoyed his descriptions of his growing up, and it spurred me to think a lot about my childhood. I grew up in a "playborhood," and this book did get me to think about the elements that made it such a good place to grow up.

I've long subscribed to Mike Lanza's blog in my RSS feed and had been really excited to read his book . . . so much so that I ordered my own copy upon discovering that the library had not ordered it. The ideas behind the playborhood philosophy rock and are ones we have as a family embraced (though we have a broader sense of "community" in terms of who constitutes our "neighborhood"), but I found the tone in Lanza's call to action really off-putting. He came across as aggressive and controlling both in terms of dealing with his neighbors and with his own children's views and so-called "free play." I was disappointed in the read as a result . . . Definitely not as inspiring as Richard Louv.… (más)
