Second of two I tried by this author. Not to my taste. Too much goofy introspection by the characters. Very wordy. Kind of silly. There was a lot of here and thereing and not much romance with the main characters. Nothing particularly wrong with it I suppose if these things don't bother you. I read the first half and skimmed the second half.

I liked this book more while I was reading it than afterwards. The author makes it almost believable that a man of Hartshire's size (6 foot 5 and broad in proportion) could appear and disappear like magic, even to the point of delivering a "mystery kiss" and vanishing without a trace and without being identified. Almost believable if you suspend your disbelief until it stretches to the breaking point. Until you close the book. I don't regret spending an enjoyable hour or two reading this story.

This is a charming book. How often do you read a romance in which the hero already has eight children? And they're so lively and interesting as characters, too. Thankfully, Judith Lansdowne makes it easy for us to keep them straight by having their father name them alphabetically.

The book is full of spying and intrigue. Lansdowne really is more of a Baroness Orczy type than a follower of Georgette Heyer! Never a dull moment. I'll be happy to read this again sometime.
