Gaiman puts a fun twist on the worlds of Doyle's Sherlock Holmes and Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythology for this story. I'll say that it helps to at least read up on both of those before reading this story. While it probably stands on it's own well enough, I think a full appreciation would be had. It'd be best enjoyed knowing some key things. This is especially useful for the ending which I didn't see coming.

I enjoyed the alternate-England (and the entire world which we get a small glimpse at) that Gaiman created for the story, though, because it's a short story, I felt sad to not get more of it. It's a good base for more stories/novels branching off from A Study in Emerald. I'd be one of the first to grab a copy of any follow-up work.
