A lot of good advice and perspective in here. Much of it just simply won't apply to my life or lifestyle, but still a very interesting principle to read about and some "food for thought" for my future.

This is the most instantly impactful book I’ve read in a long time. The Pareto principle is simple, observable and common knowledge for anyone who has studied basic economics. Still we fail to apply it, even though doing so can yield immediate returns. Koch’s writing is all about activating the concept, which he does through stories, hard data, and his own track record. In course, he turns the mantra of succeeding primarily through hard work completely on its head. He walks the walk, even recommending the reader skip certain chapters based on their needs. I’ve already started applying the concepts to my calendar and to-do list, resulting in a changed mindset throughout the day and more time for higher priorities. (I find it interesting that I had read this book 12 years ago and didn’t find it as useful or, apparently, memorable. Perhaps I am more motivated by time and practical results now, or perhaps I was just in a different place then.)… (más)

Have you ever heard about the economist, Vilfredo Pareto? He discovered something rather peculiar about distribution. It does not distribute equally. It follows a model closer to 80/20. It is known as Pareto’s Principle or the 80/20 Principle. Richard Koch detailed this 1896 principle in length in his book, The 80/20 Principle: The Secret to Achieving More with Less. It is a principle worth getting to know. href="https://tubarksblog.com/2019/08/14/book-review-the-80-20-principle-the-secret-to-achieving-more-with-less/?utm_source=goodreads&utm_medium=blog&utm_campaign=bookreview" rel="nofollow" target="_top">Read more… (más)

Overall, I found this book valuable, although some of the specific examples and suggestions felt a bit out of touch with how a majority of managers are probably able to function. Koch presents 10 strategies for managers and is clear that some are harder than others, and that he isn't suggesting you'll necessarily be able to pursue them all. He draws heavily from his experience in the consulting world and a view of life at the executive level. This made it hard for me to relate to some of the content. I had hoped for more of a middle manager focus. And I rankled at the way content was presented in the "lazy manager" chapter. While his premise makes sense--do more by doing less by being strategic about what matters--it felt like he was applauding those clever executives who did this while their teams below them toiled for long hours and little reward. To me, that's not successful leadership. Anyway, I won't quibble with some of the specific suggestions but take the refresher on the 80/20 rule as a good reminder going into 2014 to look for ways to achieve more by working less, for me and my team. Worth reading but just know you may need to adapt the ideas or take the spirit of the ideas depending on your particular situation.… (más)
