- Billie Jean King is a retired professional tennis player. During her career she won 12 Grand Slam singles titles, 16 Grand Slam women's doubles titles, and 11 Grand Slam mixed doubles titles, including a record 20 titles at Wimbledon.
King has been an advocate for women's rights and women's sports, and was influential in the passage of Title IX legislation, which mandated equality in men's and women's school and collegiate sports. In 1971 King became the first female athlete to win over $100,000. King's victory against former men's Wimbledon champion Bobby Riggs in the 1973 "Battle of the Sexes" tennis match led to greater recognition of women's tennis.
King founded the Women’s Tennis Association (1973), the Women’s Sports Foundation (1974), and Women’s Sports Magazine (1974), and co-founded World TeamTennis (1974).
She has been an advocate for social change and equality, including gay rights, and has been honored by many GLBT organizations.
