Harrowing collection of first-hand accounts of the conquest of Prussia and Danzig by Russian forces in the winter and spring of 1945, as related largely by civilians (though the boundary between civilian and military was blurred by the Volksstrum). The epic and tragic nature of the evacuations of millions of Germans from the area is recounted, though one can't help but think of the populations that had been so treated by the Germans in the 1938-1943 period. Valuable as first-hand accounts, though there are accounts out there that deal, in more detail, with specific tragedies like the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff. Recommended.… (más)

A good read but doesn't inform as much as I would have liked about the details of Operation Sea lion. A 'what if' chapter would have been good on what he believed would have happened if the operation had been launched. I get the impression he believes it would have succeeded.
