Dieter Kühn (1935–2015)

I have to admit, when I read this book, being completely unfamiliar with the author, I imagined it to be an endearingly odd work of a young amateur writer. The plot is creative and surreal, but lacks a certain depth. A scientist embarks on an expedition to the remote castle of a "sound vampire". In the course of the story, he observes the strange events caused by the vampire's quenchless thirst for sound. That's pretty much it as far as the actual story goes. Naturally, the story's focus on sound allows for some onomatopoeic descriptions that add a little colour to the whole setup. Unfortunately, the author didn't use this opportunity to delve into contemplating the nature or meaning of sound. He stays close to the surface of things. The Book's strongest part imo is a scene at the beginning, in which a "wall of sound" is described that surrounds the castle, reminiscent of the effects of bow shocks in astrophysics.
All in all an entertaining read, although with a certain juvenile feel to it.… (más)
