A Concise History of the Netherlands por James C. Kennedy

The language may be occasionally slightly stiff, even making one wonder whether the author feels more comfortable in English or in Dutch, but the amount of information provided is just the golden mean between concise and comprehensive, at least for somebody who starts reading the book knowing very little about the region's history and wants to get a general picture.
