Dolores Teresa Kendrick was born in Washington, D. C. on September 7, 1927. She received a bachelor's degree in English from Miner Teachers College, a blacks-only institution that later became part of the University of the District of Columbia, and a master's degree in teaching from Georgetown mostrar más University in 1970. She taught at D.C. public schools for nearly 20 years and at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire for 21 years. She published several collections of poetry including Through the Ceiling, Now Is the Thing to Praise, Why the Woman Is Singing on the Corner: A Verse Narrative, and Rainbow on Fire. The Women of Plums: Poems in the Voices of Slave Women won the Anisfield-Wolfe Award in 1989. She was the poet laureate of Washington, D. C. from 1999 until her death.
