To begin I should explain that I have never seen the Tasty videos on BuzzFeed. I did, however, want to review “I Love Tasty” The Unofficial Cookbook for just that reason. I wanted to see if this book could stand alone and could be enjoyed by someone who is not familiar with the Tasty videos.

Born from incidentally noticing someone taping a screenshot of a food video to the kitchen counter, the author wondered if a cookbook could be created, with a lot of step-by-step photos, in the tasty fashion. This is the result.

Recipes in this cookbook cover several categories including:

Good Morning Breakfasts
Easy Snacks And Appetisers
Soups, Salads, And Sandwiches,
Pastas, Greens, And Beans,
All Kinds Of Vegetable Dishes
Meat, Poultry, And Fish For Dinner
Sweets For Dessert – Or Anytime
Cool (and Heart) Things To Drink

The recipes do live up to the author’s vision. Beginning with a short description, each is accompanied by a lovely full-colour picture, several step-by-step photographs and detailed instructions. Some also include little tips like what kind of ingredient to use, helpful shortcuts, or variations.

Very Simple Recipes

The recipes in the book seem very easy to make. That they don’t seem to be overly complicated is maybe part of the problem. The book seems to do exactly what it set out to do. Unfortunately, I found with most of the recipes the screenshots are unnecessary. Do we need to see an empty frying pan with a little bit of oil in it to know how to put oil and frying pan? It is unnecessary to see ingredients in a blender to know how to blend ingredients.

Even for a rank beginning cook, I feel most of the step-by-step pictures are unnecessary. Had the pictures perhaps been detailing a more challenging set of recipes, this review would have been quite different. But given the simplicity of most of these recipes, I feel to screenshot every single step of the recipe is overkill.
