I liked this novel and I could almost see the shore, the mountains, and Jame's painting. James had been warned to not get involved with a female as he was on a two week vacation, but then he met two lovely sisters on the beach. At times the novel dragged and it was slightly boring.

If you seek a light romantic summer read, then this just may be the book for you. Frankly, I found the plot too far fetched to be believable. The pictorial settings were exquisitely described, yet the dialogue was rather stilted. The plot seemed more like a man's fantasy than a romance. There was an excessive number of typos and at times, awkward syntax. As for referring to this story as literary fiction, throwing in a few poems by Emily Dickinson just was not enough for me to call it such. This book could definitely benefit from some tighter editing.

I am grateful to author Yorker Keith and Goodreads First Reads for having provided a free copy of this book. Their generosity, however, did not influence this review - the words of which are mine alone.

This is my honest review of "Awakening of the Summer." I received a free e-ARC from #NetGalley.

I finished the book, because it was an easy read. Throughout, though, I kept thinking that the dialogue sounded like something from the 50s or from a non-native speaker. It was strange to me, and it wasn't a difference between "American" English versus other Englishes. Since the story is set in the US, at a time when the characters are using cell phones, It wasn't set in the 50s, so I have no explanation. The other problem I had was that I just couldn't believe the sisters both giving up on the man they both loved. It felt like a man's fantasy - he gets to "have" both women, and when it is all over, everyone lives happily ever after. The conflict felt manufactured, like boxes were being checked off. I liked what the book said it was offering, but was disappointed when it did not deliver.… (más)

This book packs a big punch with interesting elements: the backdrop of the U.N. friendship, betrayal, love, tragedy, a violinist, art, and complex emotional relationships with well-developed characters. I liked that the main character examined his choices and exhibited true emotional growth. It did take me a few pages to really get into it but once I did, I couldn't put it down.
