I enjoyed this contemporary erotic romance story. I liked the interaction between Lori and Nate. The two main characters spend most of the story having sexual encounters, but that is what Lori wanted. She had told her two best friends that all she wanted was a man who would provide “booty calls”. Nate more than proved that he could be what she wanted and needed. I found myself laughing a couple of times when Lori and her friends would get together because they are a funny trio. Nate was a little mysterious, but he knew that he belonged with Lori and vice versa. I also liked that Lori changed her mind about Nate not being able to keep a job, and was also able to see that what they felt for each other was more than just lust. The love scenes between them are steamy hot. This story contains very explicit love scenes and language.

I’ve read almost all of this series and the shorts are great—well written and have fabulous tie-ins of the Lonesome Steer Saloon and its owner and his daughter. But for me, there was just too much going on in this particular novella. There’s the secondary relationship between the heroine’s best friend and the man Jace is staying with, Jace’s brother’s troubles with the law, Sunny’s strained relationship with her dad, and her mother’s cancer scare. All of this crammed into 100 pages had my head spinning. Add to that three (count ‘em three) full love scenes and there wasn’t any room left over for character development.

That’s not to say that the book wasn’t well written; it was just under written. Neither character grew, changed, or solved any problem in their life. No one had an arch or an epiphany. They also fell in let’s-get-married-I -can’t-live-without-you love in record time.

I did enjoy the book. The characters were real (for the most part) and believable. Yet something was missing for me. Honky Tonk Man left me wanting more—like sixty thousand words more—and a chance to really get to know Sunny and Jace. Be prepared for a whirl-wind tale of relationship troubles and sex, not always a bad thing.
