Bruce F. Kawin was born in 1945 in Los Angeles, California, and has been teaching at the University of Colorado, Boulder, since 1985. His books include Faulkner and Film and Mindscreen: Bergman, Godard, and First-Person Film. He is also a poet, film critic, film historian, and literary critic.

To Have and Have Not is one of my favorite Bogart films. I enjoy it more than Casablanca. Mostly because with Bergman, Bogart was just acting but with Bacall he was truly falling in love. The camera caught it all and it's magical to watch. The plot of the movie intrigued me but I had read that it was far removed from the original book by Hemingway. I've been dragging my feet about reading the novel because I don't enjoy Hemingway. At all. When I saw this book on Amazon, I knew it was for me. The first half, called the Introduction, gives you the background on how the movie came to be and discusses the plot of the original novel in detail. Which is wonderful - now I know that I don't need to read it! The second half is the script. It varies a little from the actual movie, like most do. I enjoyed discovering what changes the actors and director had made on set - and in many cases they were right to follow their instincts. The book also has several pages of photo stills from the film and copious footnotes. It's a good resource for anyone wanting more information on the movie.… (más)
