I was under no impression that this was going to be a great work of literature. I knew it was suppose to be a funny, quick read about a mom trying to fit in with the high society moms of New York. However, I couldn’t even enjoy this as just a simple comedy because the main character is so unlikeable. She portrays the other moms as mean spirited and only concerned with superficial, silly things- yet she herself constantly uses words like ‘awky’, ‘natch’, ‘diff’, ‘mag’, and, possibly the worst, ‘neighb’. Pirates and Princesses are about a boy, fletch and a girl, Ivy, who grew up together and do everything together. They just started kindergarten and are realizing that during recess all the boys and girls are playing sepratly, boys are playing to be pirates and girls are pretending to be princesses. One day the pirates and princesses go to "war" and Ivy and Fletch break the separation and show the other children that playing together is just as fun.

Ivy and Fletch are almost destined to be friends as their mothers were even best friends and pregnant at the same time. When they were born, they were raised together and continued to be inseparable until Kindergarten. Once they reached this age, they realized that everything was about to change. They no longer did the same things as preschool but continued to play together each day at recess. Soon that even stopped, they started to play with the children of the same sexes and leave each other. This did not seem to bother them at first, but eventually they realized what was going on. They decided to play together and incorporate all their new friends!
This was such a cute book about how change happens through a child's eyes. They were used to their everyday lives and had a hard time with the change, but their friendship remained a constant. I thought that this book also did a great job discussing the topic on friendship. It showed that you can still stay close and remain friends with others but they can also make new friends.
