5658. 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Presidents and the People, 1929-1959 by Walter Johnson (read 7 Nov 2019) This is an old book, published in 1960, and telling of the presidencies of Hoover, FDR, Truman, and Eisenhower. Most of what it said I was familiar with, having lived with awareness through over 20 years of the period covered.. His view of the Hoover and FDR years I agreed with mostly. He is harder on Truman than I and I think most historians now are. I did not find the book as good as I hoped, but it was fun to read about the good things, such as the great FDR years of 1932 and 1936 and of the victory in 1945 and the stupendous triumph in 1948. But I don't suppose I learned much except to refresh my memory of what the book covered.… (más)
