Cumulative text (e.g. "there was an old woman who swallowed a fly...") takes readers through a day in the life (and sometimes death by eating) of a cricket, mouse, snake, hawk, fox, and bear. In the first version, each animal eats the next; "But some days..." another version unfolds, in which each creature escapes the next, and the bear (an omnivore) eats plants. Neal's illustrations are detailed, yet calm and spacious.
