The caste system in India has left many people in a position of being total societal outcasts, even while being called on to perform many of the most onerous and unpleasant tasks for an aristocracy that despises them. This book details the history of the untouchable caste from the point of view of a scholar who was himself born untouchable. Although many claim that the caste system in India is defunct, and that untouchables are no longer outcasts, the author demonstrates that this is only, at best, partially true.
