The book jacket says that although the many authors span a wide spectrum of viewpoints and present various interpretations of Indonesian society, they support one of the editors' pet theses - that Indonesia is "a bureaucratic polity." In fact, these essays flail about in different directions and support another thesis - that the editors didn't make much of an effort to integrate them.
