This is the story of a hamster who escapes from home to explore the outside, but finds herself afraid and unsure of what the outdoors hold. She meets a slug, a frog, a family of mice, a hedgehog, and ends up in a chicken coop. The chicken coop was the only warm, comfortable place she had found to sleep, and from there she was collected with the eggs and taken back into the safety of her home.
Uses: This would be a cute book to read if we had a class hamster or if we were going to go on a field trip to a farm! For kindergarten or something, we could discuss the different things found in this book that we might see at the farm.

I enjoy the way this book is written. The story is very interesting and fun to read. Harriet is an adventurous, little hamster that finds herself wandering through the yard and eventually into the hens nest. This book could be considered realistic fiction, because none of the animals in the story ever talk. However, it is a story that is seen through the eyes of the hamster.

Critique: This book is a realistic fiction because the story could be set in modern times and the story line is plausible. A hampster could escape, travel around the backyard, and be found again. They hampster never speaks so it could be a true story even though it is fiction. This story is an example of plot. The story has an introduction of the hampster escaping and a building intrique as she experiences all sorts of scary things in the yard.
