Georg G. Iggers (1926–2017)

I recently read Daniel Woolf's A Concise History of History, which covers the entire historiography from ancient times onwards. Iggers and Wang's book is limited to modern historiography, approximately from 1750 to the present, which is still broad enough, but it offers more room to go a bit deeper, and Iggers and Wang sure do that. This inevitably remains a list of names and movements, but the authors are much more selective, therefore less encyclopedic, and that is an advantage. It allows them to do full justice to greats such as Fernand Braudel. Moreover, they also dare to take a stand. Particularly striking are the sharp attacks against postmodernism, the subaltern approach, and the ideological abuse of historiography.
