The son of the Sun wanted to marry the daughter of the Moon, but Mother Moon disagreed. She hid her daughter away with a couple in the woods. She soon fell in love with a brother of the Northern Lights, but he could never stay until sunrise. One day the daughter of the moon tricked him and when he went to leave at sunrise he was killed by Father Sun. This folktale is to explain night and day, and while the illustrations are beautiful the story is lacking to me. It was missing something that would grab my attention.… (más)

This folktale reminded me of a strange combination of snow white and Hercules. The moon had a daughter who was then raised by humans because she was in danger. In the same way, Hercules was raised by humans because he was in danger. Vanishia, the moon's daughter, comes across a cabin one day, she cleans it and then falls asleep. When she awakes she sees eight brothers whom the cabin belongs to. In a similar way, snow white comes across a cabin and cleans it and then falls asleep. When she awakes she sees seven dwarfs whom the cabin belongs to. I may be far off but the stories have similarities. The only big difference was that the story was about the sun and the moon and why you rarely ever see them in the sky together. The story also explains why the moon appears to have a face. This is a very creative way to explain what happens in the skies. The folktale is interesting and unique.… (más)

This tale is about the son of the sun wanting to marry a wife whom he wishes to be the daughter of the moon, however, the mother of the moon does not want her daughter to marry the sun's son. The moon hides her daughter (Vanishia) with an older couple on an Island in fear that the sun might find her. One day the sun's son sees Vanishia and shows his love for her by giving her a pair of golden boots. The story goes on to Vanishing telling the sun that she refuses to marry his son. The sun throws her back into the atmosphere by her hair into her mother's arm, which is why the moon appears to be looking down on the Earth, resembling it's grief over her daughter. I would not recommend this book to a child below the fourth or fifth grade, it may be too complex for them.… (más)

This is a story by author Holly Young Huth and illustrated by Anna Vojtech, called 'The Son of the Sun and the Daughter of the Moon'. Flaming arrows, strong tides, and anger and love, and heated days and star filled nights all mix together fill the tone of this myth. Told in a 3rd person point of view, the narrator speaks of it all in a way that reminds me of a bed time story that can be told during the day by someone who lives in a world long ago where someone was able to witness the sun hopes to get the moon to wed off her daughter to the sun's son. It is like a myth told by a witness, our narrator who sees that there is not always a happy ending; particularly for the moon's daughter. Instead we get a telling of why the moon always looks so sad when shining down on the world in the night sky.… (más)
