I received this book as part of Early Reviewers. I tried. I really tried. I picked up this book more times than I could count, but I just could not stick with it. Although not a fan of unfinished books, this one will have to remain in that category. It was just so dry and slow that I could not keep focused long enough to get interested.

I reviewed this book in November and have no idea why it was not added to the reviews. I’m glad LibraryThing allowed me to read it but I do not recommend it.

John Gilfillan is a retired Boston homicide detective. There is a race to find Lori Doyle who witnessed a killing. She has since changed her name and started a new life. The book starts out slow and a bit boring with lots of description of all the characters. Needs to be mixed with action and dialogue as a lot of readers may stop reading thinking the book will lag all the way through. But once the story takes off, the chapters start to fly and becomes a real page-turner. The book abruptly ends leaving you wanting more and I do look forward to the next book. I would like to thank LibraryThing and Adalaide Books for a free copy for an honest review. Recommended.… (más)

Penance isn't your typical thriller. I did enjoy the story, but at times the pacing lagged and it felt like an overload of tell me instead of show me. It truly is unique in its genre with multiple view points used, including the clueless and lovable Lori. She's very relatable, and her ignorance about the proverbial manhunt for her just heightens the tension as you watch the net slowly close from various sides. A great way to pass a few hours.
