Book for Intermediate students. Has strong possibilities to be connected to having faith in God during hard times. A cute scarecrow sits and watches over the crops while every year a little girl reads to him until she gets older, the scarecrow waits faithfully for her to come back and read to him again and after many seasons of trials she does.

This book is about a scarecrow named Hopefully, and his desire for a life beyond the cornfield where he stands. One day he decided to make his very own hands and explore the world!

I recommend this book kindergarten-1st grade. It is full of fun pictures, and a great story line, encouraging the kids with the desire of take new adventures.

First sentence: A scarecrow stood in the garden. Tall, proud, smiling. Like most of us, he didn't remember the very beginning of his days. He only knew he was created with loving hands. Carefully crafted. Wonderfully made. He did remember the first time she placed him on his perch. She set him up straight, stood back, and smiled. Hopefully, the scarecrow will keep the birds away," she'd said. He hadn't known his name was Hopefully. But he liked it.

Premise/plot: Hopefully (the scarecrow) has a great life--for the most part. It is made better by the stories he hears every day. But the 'little' girl who is his faithful friend and companion doesn't stay 'little' forever. She grows up...and life changes....but can Hopefully still find his place in the world?

My thoughts: This one is lovely, sweet, and enjoyable. I love a good fall-themed story, especially if it is NOT Halloween themed. This one celebrates STORIES and friendship as well. I absolutely love the ending of this one. Definitely recommended.

Winterfrost is a wonderfully different book!

I don't often see children's books set in Nordic countries, so I was excited that Winterfrost is set in Denmark. And instead of focusing on the usual fantasy novel characters--fairies, dragons, and so on--Winterfrost centers around nisse (basically gnomes), little creatures in peaked hats who can be found dwelling in trees in the forest, or in barns to watch over a human family's animals, or in houses to watch over a human family.

Bettina, the main character, is sensible and responsible. Unlike the characters of so many middle-grade novels lately, she's not weird or goofy or mistake-prone, which is a refreshing change. She's happy to hold down the fort while her parents are away and isn't at all resentful at being left to care for her baby sister, Pia.

Winterfrost is an enjoyable middle-grade novel with a touch of fantasy, an element of adventure, and a dash of Christmas spirit that will be enjoyed by girls and boys.

Note: I received a digital galley of this book through NetGalley.
