The focus of Professor Holt's book is on individual lives, teased out of archives and public records. The result is a subtly reasoned, very readable book covering the scope of African American history. He reveals the nuances and complexities of the lives of both well known and private individuals. The scope is amazing, each stage is meticulously covered. The index covers both topics and individuals, making this a valuable source for students covering any time period.
