Ten takes, from people in disciplines ranging from philosophy to engineering, on the possibility of artificial consciousness. Jesse Prinz is deeply thoughtful on the skeptical side. I was most intrigued by Susan Blackmore's contention that human consciousness is an illusion caused by memes competing to replicate, and that machines capable of truly imitating humans will fall prey to the same illusion.
