Like so many books of this nature this is really about the inns and villages of southern England. Devon gets eleven entries, Derbyshire just one; Sussex gets seven entries, Lancashire none. Of interest, nevertheless, as a memento of an age before the roads were choked with cars, and the photographs of inn interiors are welcome indeed.

British author goes into excruciating detail on the history of Bramah and Chubb locks. Americans are mentioned. Yale is first acknowledged and then dismissed as a copycat. Hobbes is credited as a great talent only because he met the challenge of picking a Chubb lock.
