I have just begun this book but was immediately drawn in by the writing in the introduction. Particularly like the physical format of the book. The heavy stock paper reminds me of all the coffee table art books I had ever seen.
I do have to say that it got to the point that I skimmed some of the letters in the book. I got really tired of reading about the mules and the weather and was really surprised that he would take the time to write all that. It really got interesting for me once he married and there was more of a description of his work.
The breathe of talent is staggering. He was an artist in so many genres that I was glad to see exampled of all that.

Peter Hiller’s The Life and Times of Jo Mora: Iconic Artist of the American West is an exquisitely produced biography of a truly gifted and under appreciated artist who brilliantly captured his chosen slice of Americana. Hiller’s use of Mora’s diary entries serve to put an authentic autobiographical stamp on the narrative, surely making this the definitive book on the subject. Printed on heavy stock, semi-gloss paper, and profusely illustrated, this book is a joy to read and savor. This stunning work provides great insights into Mora’s creative process, Hopi and Navajo culture, and the rich aesthetic of the American West.… (más)

I don't think I'd ever heard the name, Jo Mora, before receiving this wonderful book, but it's not likely one I'd forget now. The book is generously illustrated throughout in both color and black and white with Mora's drawings, paintings, sculptures, and other works of art, as well as numerous family photos. I especially like the full-page reproductions of his cartes (maps), which had me digging out my magnifying glass to get a better look at the details. I also particularly like that so much of the narrative is in Mora's own words from the letters he wrote. I don't like that the book is so heavy - something over two pounds - but that didn't stop me from reading it from cover to cover. Thank you to Early Reviewers for making it available. Highly recommended.… (más)

On a recent episode of Antiques Roadshow someone brought in a painting by the early 20th century western American artist Jo Mora. I had an aha moment. The painting was surprisingly valuable. This is an enjoyable biography exploring Mora’s life and works, an artist who deserves to be more widely known.
