It was okay, well written, but sparse in areas. It seemed to play off the "needy" aspect quite strongly at first, to the point that I almost put it down, then let up as it got more into his career. It wasn't nearly as comprehensive as the other biography I read by Dave Itzkoff. I think this was written as quickly as possible after Robin Williams passed away, it makes no mention of his misdiagnosis of Parkinson's disease. The impression I got is the material was sourced via the media, which isn't a problem, but seemed to lack a personal touch. It did contain one aspect that was missing from Dave Itzkoff's biography and that was Robin's love of video games. If you want a quick rundown, then this book is fine. If you want a more in-depth look, then Itzkoff's book is the way to go.… (más)
Fascinating subject matter - hence my eagerness to read.
However, although I learned some things I hadn’t known before I didn’t feel the author was particularly qualified to give me any great insights into the man behind the image. In fact, I came away feeling the whole thing had been rushed out in the wake of his death, and that given enough time and internet searching I could have produced as much myself. [Especially the pages of Twitter tributes and eulogies at the beginning and the list of his jokes at the end - valid inclusions yes, but not exactly hard to come by]
There was a lot of other ‘filler’ information throughout, such as synopses of movies and reviews.
The style was annoying - a lot of phrase repetition, sometimes even within the same page.
Even given all this, it was an interesting read.… (más)

Emily Herbert specialises in celebrity biographies and this is not one of her top rated works on Goodreads or LibraryThing. (For the record, her top-rated works are her biographies of Robin Williams and Lady Gaga.) She does a decent job of making bricks out of straw here, and explains the history of Doctor Who rather well to a target audience whose interest may be less than obsessive. But the really interesting biography (or autobiography) of Matt Smith will be written a couple of decades from now.… (más)
