It's a great book, but unless you own something from the late, lamented, Sun Microsystems, and it's oh, so very old, this book is merely a curiosity. I know very few architectures still running Motif. I know of NONE that are running OPEN LOOK (aka XView). Still, it's a nice thing to have in your library, as a reference, if for no other purpose.

I only used it when converting from OLT into Motif; I never ever created a system in it. It was very useful for that, and it may be that someone may still run into some old code somewhere. I can remember holding my breath for the long promised Motif references from Tim O'Reilly, and when it first arrived (initially it was a single volume) it was huge, and heavy, and I wore it out in the first two months.

I'm not sure why Amazon/O'Reilly listed Brennan as the primary author, considering that he was responsible for contributing the UIL information, but I'm not sure he did anything else. I've followed the information in the book, which lists him separately as a contributor.

Absolutely a great book for beginners and immediate photographers. In a easy to follow manner, the author slowly explains rules, cameras, lenses, filters, bags, tripods, and other useful accessories.

He has many suggestions for photographing, people, places, extended exposures for showing movement, fireworks, lightning and star trails.

This book covers everything. Highly recommended.
