diverse teen fiction --biracial (black/white) 12th grader with professional jazz composer aspirations mixes with rave party crowds when her older sister comes home from college and takes her out with her.
This is mostly a cautionary tale for those who think party drugs (ecstasy, molly) are harmless and non-addictive (there's a reason why they're illegal, and they're most often cut with strange or dangerous chemicals)--there is also a significant amount of drinking and sex (consensual but still statutory rape). I did enjoy meeting the character of DJ Shay and seeing what she had to teach Mira.
I didn't expect to like this book that much but the writing is good and the storyline makes for a page-turner. Especially recommended for musical teens (author has extensive DJ network in her background).

Just finished this beauty of a book, WHEN THE BEAT DROPS by @heckerbooks is about Mira, a jazz nerd who can’t afford to go to music camp where she will prepare for a super important audition to get into music school. Instead she spends her summer attending warehouse parties and raves with her sister who is home from college (who is hiding way more than Mira can imagine). Over the summer, Mira learns about DJing and enters a world she would have never imagined. She learns about love, drugs, friendship, loss, family and herself. 🖤 At times it felt like a cautionary tale about drug use but the writing in this book is BEAUTIFUL. Anna Hecker makes you SEE the music when you can’t hear it. Overall, an absolutely beautiful book that I’m so grateful to have read.… (más)

Every time I say the title, it morphs in my head from simply words to an announcement, an anthem if you will, backed by DJ "footwork" and beats that vibrate in your chest.

What I loved about this one was how the story married all types of music together, how the author took us behind the turntable into the hearts and souls of those who make or mix the music, and how much deeper the story ran than at first may be perceived. We've got sibling rivalry, artistic competition, family breakdown, those who've unknowingly lost their way, those just finding it, musical expression/appreciation, friendship lost and grown anew, first love/lust, drug use and repercussions of such...shall I continue? The elements of the story run as varied a circle as the notes that make up its virtual tracks, and are as colorful as the outfits sported by the attendees.

Outside of the musical expressions and adventures, or perhaps it's better to say intertwined with it, is the story of two sisters finding their way after loss, anger, and the bitterness of the world has had its way. Each character introduced has something to share, to learn, or simply to endure, but it enriches the story that much more.

In the end, it was a musically charged tale that I simply did NOT want to end, but end it did and really WOW...just WOW. It'll take you on a ride you weren't expecting, to places you never dreamed to visit, and leave you with a new appreciation for music, life, family, and friends. Along with the entertainment factor, you've got a great reminder to follow your dreams, wherever they may lead, and even though they may change along the way, that's okay...it's YOUR beat, your mix to make.

I received this book for free as part of BookSparks’ YA Summer Reading Challenge.

Going into this book, I didn’t have very high expectations. I thought it was just going to be an average contemporary YA summer read. Instead, this book blew me away.

The way the author describes music is incredible. From the very beginning you could just feel the passion that the main character, Mira, has for jazz music, and then later on for DJing. Prior to reading this book, I never thought of DJing as being that beautiful. But after reading this, I’m never going to look at it the same way. I have a newfound respect for it.

I liked that this book didn’t shy away from the drug aspect of rave culture. That was a huge part of the story and it highlighted the reality of it very well.

I also enjoyed Mira and Britt’s sisterly relationship and the journey they went through together. A large chunk of the book is focused on them going to these music festivals and how they cope with the devastating tragedy that happens at one of them.

Character-wise, I loved Shay! She was hands down my favorite character. I was actually shipping her and Mira after they first met, even though I knew (based on the blurb) that was probably not going to happen.

Another aspect of this book that I loved was the secrets that some of the characters had. They were all revealed at the right time and it just made the story click.

Overall, this is an impressive novel that was realistic and hit all the right notes!
