Biografía breve
He began his career as a singing teacher, being largely a self-taught musician. Hastings compiled the hymn book Spiritual Songs with Lowell Mason in 1831, which included his most well-known hymn "Rock of Ages." He then moved to New York City, where he served as a choir master for 40 years, from 1832 to 1872. Hastings was a prolific composer, writing some 1000 hymn tunes over his career.

Per Gilberts Chase in Music in America, this was Hastings most popular singing school book. It was printed from 1816 to 1836 . It did not take on the typical rectangular format tune 1823 ("to accommodate musicians"). Many tunes are the same in the editions but not all. Instruction in first editions was 4 pages, in 1823 30 pages and in this edition page v1-xx1111. 3-4 staffs. Round notes. Base, Air, 2nd treble and tenor parts. (No alto). See review and comments of 1818 edition for additional information… (más)
