The novel starts with Meg Harris living in the forest near an Indian Reserve in Quebec. Eric, the local chief, is a close friend and eventually her protector as her search for her missing friend, Marie, gets closer to the truth of who owns the island where the mining company her ex-husband is involved with plans a gold mine.

A good mystery with many turns and twists with a back story going to Germany in 1913. I will look for another Meg Harris mystery.

I really expected to like this book a lot more than I did. From the description it sounded very appealing. I do love a good trapped in a blizzard story. I was not able to muster up much interest in these characters. The dialogue felt unnatural to me and one character in particular whose name escapes me already since he was mostly referred to as "The Serbian" truly grated on my nerves with his stereotypical broken English. The main character's repeated thwarted attempts at escape began to bore me and I just couldn't make myself care much one way or the other whether any of them lived or died. I did start out at least rooting for the dog to live but after too many "little brown sausages" on the floor I can't say I cared too much for her either. I would give it 2 and a half stars.

I received an advance copy for review

Originally from Toronto, she, with her husband, now divides her time between her home in Ottawa and a log cabin in West Quebec. A lover of the outdoors, she can often be found roaming the surrounding forests or canoeing the waterways. Because of this love for the untamed wilds she decided that she would bring its seductive allure alive in her writings.… (más)

Timely and well intentioned, but never rises above the research.
