Kurfürstin Sophie von Hannover (1630–1714)

Sophia of Hanover, née Sophie, Princess Palatine of the Rhine, missed out on becoming queen of Great Britain by less than two months after many years of anticipation. She was born in The Hague, Netherlands, to the exiled Frederick V, Elector of the Palatinate and his wife Elizabeth Stuart of England, known as the "Winter King and Queen of Bohemia" for their brief reign there. In 1658, she married Ernest Augustus, Elector of Hanover, with whom she had seven children. Sophia, Electress of Hanover, was declared heiress presumptive to the thrones of England and Scotland (later Great Britain) and Ireland under the Act of Settlement of 1701. She died in June 1714, and her eldest son became King George I in August, succeeding Queen Anne.
