I can so relate to Carolyn's struggles with jealously, and her struggling to figure out how to become a leader. She believes at first that relinquishing control means she's failing, but she learns that's not always the case. I just wish Ken weren't so perfect.

I collect old YA books mostly for sociological reasons. This one is especially formulaic: the shy & withdrawn girl who tries out to be a drum majorette and finds it leads her to a new understanding of herself. All the morals are also here: to have friends you have to be one; to be a true contributor one has to sometimes put the group in front of ones self; and the steady, seemingly "old shoe" boy is really the better romantic partner than the flashy athletic star of one's dreams.
