Arthur Twining Hadley II was born in Manhattan, New York on June 24, 1924. During World War II, he enlisted in the Army. He was wounded in Europe and was awarded the Purple Heart and Silver Star. He graduated from Yale University in 1949. He wrote several books that critiqued America's military mostrar más preparedness during the Cold War. His book include The Joy Wagon, Do I Make Myself Clear?, The Nation's Safety and Arms Control, and The Straw Giant - Triumph and Failure: America's Armed Forces, a Report from the Field. He also wrote two plays. As a journalist, he worked for Newsweek, The New York Herald Tribune, and New Times magazine. He was consultant to think tanks and to the Joint Chiefs of Staff and a campaign press secretary to Adlai E. Stevenson, the Democratic nominee, during the 1956 presidential race.
