Nesta nova edição, o autor manteve as características da obra nos estudos neotestamentários, a abordagem que insere o estudioso no ambiente em que se formaram os textos do NT, as discussões francas e objetivas sobre a composição dos livros (local, autoria, data e autenticidade), sobre os primeiros destinatários e sobre o mundo político e religioso de então. Robert H. Gundry introduziu também algumas mudanças nesta edição, entre elas o rearranjo do conteúdo; Em vez de tratar os evangelhos de forma harmonística e acompanhar o ministério de Jesus nos evangelhos como um todo (como nos capítulos 5 a 11 da versão anterior), na nova edição o autor elaborou três capítulos que dão essa visão geral (capítulos 4 a 6) e depois trata os quatro evangelhos de forma separada, um por capítulo (capítulos 7 a 10).
